why LLEAD?

Working with Hispanic leaders for the past twenty years has been uniquely gratifying. There is a strong interest by both the private and public sectors to better understand Hispanics that mirrors the need for developing Hispanic leaders. The depth of knowledge, range of talent and diversity of perspectives represented by LLEAD participants makes for a truly powerful experience. Being in a roomful of first, second and third generation Latinos from various countries of origin and professional backgrounds, who are able to be candid and willing to engage, discuss, receive feedback, explore options and map strategies is exhilarating. As one would expect, there is also much encouragement and optimism.

Practicing effective leadership is as much an art as it is a science. If we think of leadership as that place where competence - your expertise, your know-how - meets authenticity - your identity, character and attitude - then being able to engage with other Hispanics in a safe environment is a great way to begin the leadership development journey. Understanding the connection between who we are and what we do is the all-important first step.

What we often hear from Latino managers is that while they've refined their competence and expertise to the point of being perceived as indispensable, issues of identity and lack of comfort or confidence with the "non-performance criteria" of the corporate world often get in the way of their ability to lead, and be perceived as leaders. This can translate into outcomes such as being passed over for promotions and high visibility assignments. Being comfortable with the reality of power, using it with intent, driving agendas, influencing others, and being able to read the political environment in organizations are also key elements of effective leadership which Hispanics must develop. LLEAD provides a setting where managers have permission to be who they are, including being Hispanic. The content, process and experience of LLEAD helps participants identify specific areas they want to focus on and make an impact that matters to them. From this place of both competence and authenticity, true leadership can occur at every level and add value in the form of a re-energized and productive workforce.
